Here is how we do business.
We print sustainably, doing things all responsible printers should do. We use only vegetable-oil based and low-Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) inks. We use low-VOC and citrus-based solvents. We recycle our photo chemistry, film, paper offcuts, and photopolymer printing plates. Empty ink cans and old rags are kept out of landfills. In our break room and our offices, we recycle and compost our waste. We use recycled packaging materials and reuse packing materials and corrugated that our vendors send us. We donate surplus paper and envelopes once a year to our local public schools. We reuse paper scraps for office notes. Our retail packaging is biodegradable, tree-free, and petroleum-free. We package our custom work in keepsake boxes made here in Syracuse from 100% post-consumer recycled materials.
We use bamboo to make our paper and envelopes because bamboo is truly sustainable. It's the fastest growing plant on this planet and grown without pesticides or fertilizers. Bamboo also makes (hands down) the prettiest paper out there.
We work to reduce our carbon footprint. We are entirely wind-powered through Native Energy. Working with the Conservation Fund’s Go Zero program, we’ve “zeroed out” our business’s carbon footprint by planting trees. We offer bus passes to employees to encourage public transportation usage. Also for our employees, we subsidize 20-week Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) memberships with a local organic farm, because we believe our food shouldn't have to travel 1,500 miles to reach us.
We give to environmental causes. Through 1% for the Planet, we donate 1% of sales to environmental organizations who are doing essential work to save the Earth. Because we're printers, we worry about deforestation's impact on the world. So we partner with American Forests (the country's oldest citizens' non-profit organization) to help slow global warming through the planting of trees. We do pro bono printing for those causes we believe in.
We encourage customers like you to do their part too. We encourage you to donate trees when placing your orders online or through stores (and if you plant a tree, we'll plant a tree too). During the custom invitation ordering process, we also make it easy for you to sign up for 41 pounds, a nonprofit organization committed to reducing junk mail by 80-95%. (learn more)
We challenge ourselves to do better with 1, 3 and 5 year environmental goals for our company. (Check out the environmental goals of our parent company Boxcar Press).
